Should a New Brand Shoot Product Photos or Product Videos First?

Oct 6, 2026

Photos. For many new brands, the answer is that simple.

It comes down to where your product gets seen first. A listing on Amazon, Flipkart, or your own website cannot go live without images. It can go live without a video. So photos get you into the market, and video is what you add once the shop is open.

What Photos Do That Video Can't

A buyer scrolling through search results sees one small thumbnail per product, and that thumbnail is a photo. If it looks dull or badly lit, nobody clicks. Whatever video you made then sits unwatched on a page with no visitors.

Photos also get reused everywhere. The same set goes into your catalogue, WhatsApp broadcasts, Instagram grid, packaging inserts, and the deck you send to distributors. A good product photographer in Ahmedabad will ask for that list before the shoot and plan the shots around it, so one day of work covers months of marketing.

When Video Should Come First

There are exceptions, and they are specific.

If your product has to be seen working, shoot video first. Think of a vegetable chopper, a hair straightener, or a folding study table. No photo explains a mechanism as quickly as ten seconds of someone using it.

The second case is a brand that plans to sell mainly through Instagram Reels or paid ads. There, the video is the shopfront, and photos can wait a few weeks.

Then there is fabric. Anyone selling sarees or dress material knows that fall and sheen do not show up in a still image. Cloth sells when it moves.

The Mistake of Doing Both Badly

Many new brands split a small budget in half and end up with average photos and an average video. It is better to do one properly. Ten sharp images will bring in more orders than five weak ones plus a shaky clip shot on a phone.

Once sales start coming in, bring in a video production company in Ahmedabad for the second round. By then you will know which product moves fastest and which questions customers keep asking, and that tells you what the video should show.

Or Plan Both Together

If the budget allows, a combined shoot makes sense. The lighting, props, and models are already in place, so you pay for the setup only once. Motion Matrix Media handles both photography and video, which means a brand can finish its stills in the morning and its product films after lunch without briefing two separate teams.

Start with photos. Add video when the product has earned it.
